INTRAMUROS LEARNING SESSIONS (ILS) EPISODE NO. 85
OVERVIEW
Right before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, a report of colonial period features unearthed during a road rehabilitation project caught the attention of the National Museum of the Philippines. Thru the Archaeology Division, the NMP investigated and documented these tunnel structures exposed underneath the main roads of Intramuros, revealing its construction and stories of its deposition. This lecture will present the archaeological activities of the NMP at the walled city before and during the global pandemic, providing you with a glimpse of the sewage system of Colonial Manila and some relevant details that we learned from the artifacts recovered from it.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Timothy James “Taj” Vitales is a museum researcher at the Archaeology Division of the National Museum of the Philippines. Currently a PhD student at University of the Philippines School of Archaeology, Taj earned his Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology (cum laude) and Masters of Arts in Archaeology at the same university in Diliman. He served as the former vice-president of the Kapisanan ng mga Arkeologist sa Pilipinas, Inc (KAPI), and is currently an associate member of the National Research Council of the Philippines. He is also the program director of Tuklas Pilipinas Society, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides heritage literacy to the public through archaeology. His research interests include the archaeology of Manila and the Tagalog region, zooarchaeology, population movements in prehistory, burial traditions, and archaeological heritage education.

The
Intramuros Learning Sessions (ILS) is the educational webinar series of the Intramuros Administration (IA). The IA is an attached national government agency under the Department of Tourism.
Topics are interdisciplinary and cover themes related to Intramuros and Manila studies, Philippine studies, as well as cultural heritage studies. Pursuant to IA’s charter, the ILS aims to contribute to the strengthening of the Filipino’s national identity and sense of belonging and pride.
